Reiki is known as a healing system but it is more than that.
It is a way of being. It helps us embody our true nature which is love, to act from love, and bring forth this energy of acceptance and light to the world. It is a wonderful practice to increase awareness, consciousness, intuition, personal growth, wisdom, and to really feel connected to our lives, the divine, and the world around us. It allows us to bridge and melt the physical and spiritual realm into one.
Reiki means universal life force energy. Rei = universal or spiritual consciousness. It refers to a higher power, wisdom, or force that is the divine. Ki = vital life force or energy that animates all living things
Together, Reiki is a tool to promote healing by restoring the distribution of this universal life force within the body.
We all intuitively use Reiki. When we were young and got hurt, a Mother’s caring touch would soothe our pain emotionally, spiritually, & physically. When we get injured, we naturally hold and protect that area. In doing this, we send attention and Reiki to those parts to help them recover.
This energy is available to everyone. It is your birth right to access the magic of this energy. It is within us to heal ourselves, help others heal, and heal the world. All you have to do is have an intention to align with the divine, with the energy of creation, then surrender your intellect and your mind so that your heart can lead the way.
We are all energy.
We are made of energy and different frequencies. Each organ, muscle, tissue, & bone vibrates at a different frequency which ultimately determines its physical form. The denser something is, the lower the frequency. For example, our bones have a lower frequency than our thoughts and our blood.
Everything has a magnetic pulse called a bio-magnetic field or electro-magnetic field. This is called Prana or Qi in Eastern traditions. In Western traditions, they use different machines such as electrocardiogram to measure the magnetic field of the body.
During a healing session, a practitioners hands and energy field emit a measurable electromagnetic or bio-magnetic field, recorded at 7-10 Hz. This field is stronger than that of a non practitioner and the frequencies associated with it fall into the Theta and Alpha brainwave range which create states of deep relaxation, meditation, and healing responses in the body. These frequencies lower stress hormones, improve the immune response, and allow for tissue repair.
Since we are all made of frequencies, we can think of a healing session through the imagery of two tuning forks. This is called entrainment and it is the tendency for two objects or people to vibrate in harmony, when they are in proximity. They influence each other until they synchronize. This is also reflected in biology: heart cells beat in unison, brainwave states aligning to rhythmic stimuli like drums, women living together often find their menstrual cycles align, people’s breathing and heart rates align when meditating together.
When a Reiki practitioner places their hands or is near a client, the clients physiological rhythms (nervous system, brainwaves, biofield) can entrain to the more coherent, balanced state of the practitioner. This is just as two tuning forks would, when one is struck, the other begins to vibrate.
In simple words, the practitioners calm, meditative, and harmonized energy field may pull the clients system from stress, lack of rhythm, or feeling unsettled into a similar state of coherence and relaxation, which promotes deep cellular healing and repair.
This is all about resonance. A healing is never forced. It is simply about allowing a sync to embody Reiki, or universal life force energy, which is coherent, open, and infinitely balanced. It is the human mind and ego which results in imbalance, lack of harmony, or illness.
What is the history of reiki?
Reiki is not owned by anyone or anything. It belongs to us all. We wouldn’t be living and breathing were it not for Reiki. Yet, there are so some wonderful people that channeled this healing modality and spread the teachings across the world.
Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered this healing practice at the end of the 19th century yet it it said to have been around for centuries. He was born on August 15th, 1865. At an early age, he attended a Tendai Buddhist school near Mt. Kurama. He studied medical science, religion, divination, history, and psychology and many other healing techniques but noticed that all these tools depleted the energy of the practitioner. He wondered if it was possible to heal without using the energy of the practitioner.
There is a small waterfall under Mt. Kurama where people stand to meditate and is known to open the crown chakra. Usui was taking a training here at the time and may have meditated there. During this training he became of aware of the healing powers of Universal Life Force Energy, he began to help others heal by using this energy, rather than using his own energy. From there, he established a Reiki centre and began to train other teachers. He traveled plenty sharing Reiki and passed away from a stroke on March 9th, 1926.
It was Mrs. Hayashi Takata who brought Reiki to the West. She was born and lived in Hawaii, she later traveled to Japan to learn under Dr. Hayashi, who studied under Dr. Usui. In Hawaii, she taught many people, was an amazing businesswomen and facilitated powerful healings but she left no records of her work. She never gave written material or records, only oral teachings.
